Former President John Mahama has accused the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) of running down the economy.
Speaking to an audience in the Netherlands, he said since the current administration took office, ordinary Ghanaians have to struggle to provide for their basic needs.
“It has been seven years of corruption, seven years of waste, seven years of arrogance, seven years of impunity, seven years of nepotism, seven years of abuse of office, seven years of human rights violation, and worst of all seven years of economic mismanagement.
“Seven years of reckless mismanagement of the economy has rendered our people broken and struggling from one day to the other just to survive,” he said.
He explained that the reckless management of the economy has led to Ghana being ranked among countries with the worst-performing currencies.
“The Ghanaian economy is now classified among the worst managed in the world and we are currently in the same basket as countries as Sri Lanka, Ghana, our beloved country, Ghana Nkrumah’s country,” he bemoaned.
The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress said the state of the economy has either crippled or forced many businesses to relocate to other countries.
“Inflation is at a record high, impacting the prices of essential goods and services and escalating an already severe cost of living crisis.
“Our country, the Ghana cedi, has suffered one of its steepest declines in decades, and a month ago it was considered one the worst performing currencies in the world.
“Businesses are stressed and are being pushed to the brink with quite a number of them left with no choice but to either fold up or relocate to our neighbouring countries,” he added.
