The Communications Officer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) does not believe that Alan Kyerematen is anywhere near being an option to be considered by voters in the 2024 elections.
According to Sammy Gyamfi, despite what he sees as a laudable move to break away from the party over intimidation, among other allegations, jumping into the presidential race may be a little too hasty for the former Trade Minister.
He was speaking on an X (formerly Twitter) Space moments after Alan announced his decision to resign from the governing NPP.
Sammy Gyamfi said the fact that the former Minister was part of the Economic Management Team that supervised the country’s worst economic crunch in a generation makes him a very unlikely candidate for the top job.
“His track record is very weak and shambolic,” he said on Monday, September 25, 2023.
For him, Alan Kyerematen’s tenure at the Ministry also saw some killer taxes that put many businesses in a precarious situation, with many folding up as a result.
“He has been an active part of the team that has messed up our economy such that today we are a bankrupt country having defaulted on our debt obligations and so on. Under his stewardship as Minister for Trade and Industry, we saw some of the worst policies for the trade and industry sector, we saw taxes upon taxes... and we saw many businesses suffocating under these nuisance taxes and collapsing in the process leading to thousands of job losses,” he added.
This track record is not much to write home about.
He was however confident that the National Democratic Congress is open to welcoming Mr Kyerematen if he decides to join their ranks.
