JoyNews, your fearless, independent and credible news source, is set to hold a national dialogue on illegal mining.
The dialogue, titled "Poisoned for Gold," is scheduled for December 04, 2023, at the Labadi Beach Hotel, Accra.
The national dialogue comes on the back of JoyNews’ “Poisoned for Gold” documentary, which is seeking to foster a comprehensive understanding of the challenges posed by illegal mining and to explore viable solutions to mitigate its impact on the environment.
The national dialogue will be preceded by a 30-minute screening of the "Poisoned for Gold" documentary.
Prominent figures from the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, the Forestry Commission, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Minerals Commission, researchers, environmental agencies, government bodies, advocacy groups, and traditional authorities, will participate in the panel discussions by sharing their expertise and perspectives on the gravity of the issue.
The exercise will also provide a platform for affected communities to voice their concerns and engage in a constructive dialogue with decision-makers.
Ghana's forests, known for its biodiversity and ecological significance, are facing severe degradation due to unauthorized mining activities. Trees are being pulled down indiscriminately, disrupting the delicate balance of the ecosystem and posing a threat to the nation's natural heritage.
Rivers and water bodies, once a source of life, are now bearing the brunt of contamination from illegal mining. Concerns are mounting over the presence of heavy metals, including lead and mercury, in these water sources. Communities residing along the riverbanks are particularly vulnerable as they rely on these waters for various domestic and agricultural purposes.
The national dialogue will produce a communiqué for the consideration of policy makers.
The event is partnership with Ghana Chamber of Mines and Water Aid, and comes off at 4pm on December 04, 2023, at the Labadi Beach Hotel. The event is open to the public.
