The annual 2015 Presbyterian Church of Ghana Moderator’s Essay Competition Awards for children has taken place at the Peyer Memorial Congregation at Bantama in Kumasi.
Over 1,450 children entered the competition at the Local, District and National level with participants writing on the topic: "Saved to bear fruits."
The topic incidentally was the Church's 2014 theme.
Six participants from the Children Service and the Junior Youth came tops after thorough scrutiny of their various essays and were given various awards for their feat.
The award winners for the Children Service category were Yaw Ansah Gyekye of the Prince of Peace Congregation at Old Tafo in the Akyem Abuakwa Presbytery, followed by Mary Agyeiwaa Agyare of Trinity Congregation at Kwabeng also in the Akyem Abuakwa and Ebenezer Owusu Acheampong of Bethel Congregation at Adukrom in the Akuapem Presbytery.
For the Junior Youth category, Emeralda Yeboah Kusi of Trinity Congregation at Adweso in the Akuapem Presbytery emerged the winner, followed by Vera Lawer Mateko of Manya Kpogunor in the Dangme-Tongu Presbytery and Abena Afra Nkansah-Gyamfi of Ascension Congregation in Koforidua in the Akuapem Presbytery.
The winners received GHC1,000.00, GHC 600.00 and GHC 400.00 plus full pieces of the Church’s cloth and certificates respectively.
The Director of Church Life and Nurture of the General Assembly Office of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana Rev Kwaku Bio Kyeame in a brief speech congratulated the children for taking part in the competition, and urged other children to take part in the competition in subsequent years. He also urged parents to encourage their children to take part.
The Director further mentioned that out of the 17 Presbyteries in Ghana, only 8 took part in the competition. He therefore expressed concern about lack of interest shown by some presbyteries of the Church in the competition.
The Moderators of the General Assembly, Right Reverend Professor Emmanuel Martey congratulated the children for their involvement in the competition.
