Early this week, in a letter to Parliament signed by the Executive Secretary to the President, Nana Asante Bediatuo, requested the House to refrain from sending the anti-gay bill to President Nana Akufo-Addo for his assent.
The decision, according to Nana Bediatuo Asante, stems from the acknowledgement of two pending applications for an order of interlocutory injunction before the Supreme Court against the bill. However, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin and the Minority disagreed with this ruling it is unconstitutional for President Akufo-Addo to refuse the transmission of the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, 2021.
Later, the Speaker suspended the consideration of the nomination of Ministers and Deputy Ministers of State by President Akufo-Addo citing an interlocutory injunction filed at the Supreme Court by MP for South Dayi, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor.
Today on Newsfile, the host Samson Lardy Anyenini and his guests delved deeper into the issues arising and the way forward.
Also on the show today is the impasse between the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
PURC had called out ECG for allegedly acting irresponsibly when it used part of the money accrued under the cash waterfall mechanism to purchase fuel to generate power. The decision, which left the Volta River Authority (VRA) and the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) cashless under the mechanism between November 2023 and January 2024, is said to be impacting negatively on the operational capacity of the two entities.
The PURC has issued a one-week ultimatum to ECG to respond to a set of demands and warned that it may resort to sanctions if the demands are not met.
