As part of its Corporate Social Responsibility, the insurance industry led by the National Insurance Commission (NIC) has donated 2,203 units of blood to the National Blood Service of Ghana (NBSG).
The gesture is part of the industry’s annual CSR campaign, which focuses on mobilizing blood units to support hospitals.
The climax of the 2023 blood donation campaign by the insurance industry, spearheaded by the National Insurance Commission witnessed a donation of 40 Caesarean Section Packs to the maternity ward of the Greater Accra Regional Hospital.
Speaking to Joy Business, the acting Commissioner of Insurance, Michael Kofi Andoh explained the need for people to volunteer for blood donation.
“You will never know when you or a loved one will need blood. So as a nation it is our responsibility to make sure that the blood banks are well stocked blood is one thing you cannot import. You have to donate”.
He expressed the industry’s commitment to continue with the campaign.
“Every insurance and brokerage company came out in their numbers to donate. It has been overwhelming. Next year we will do better.”
With Ghana’s annual demand for blood units hovering around 300,000, units the outgoing Director of the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, Dr. Emmanuel Srofenyoh was full of praise for the gesture but was quick to appeal for more.
“This is a very great achievement but there is still more room for improvement.”
For the 2022 campaign the industry successfully mobilized 2,215 a giant leap from the 2021 figure of 801. The industry’s initiative has been the most donation by a group of individuals for the National Blood Service of Ghana for the third year running.
The campaign was under the theme ‘Donate blood; save a life – ‘as you do it for someone, you do it for yourself’, is championed by National Insurance Commission with support from the Insurance Brokers’ Association-IBAG, Chartered Insurance Institute of Ghana-CIIG, Ghana Insurers Association-GIA, Women In Network of Ghana-WING and the ECOWAS Brown Card Insurance Scheme.
