Managers of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) are pushing for the expansion of the referral centre to improve access to quality healthcare.
The 70-year-old structure is yet to witness any major renovation.
As a result, the leadership of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) on Tuesday, June 11, asked Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia to intervene and address the challenges facing the hospital.
Speaking to JoyNews, the Deputy Medical Director at KATH, Dr Yaw Opare Larbi, expressed the hope that the completion of some major hospitals in the region will help reduce the burden on KATH.
"If we have these hospitals coming on board and they are tertiary facilities, then because Komfo Anokye gets complicated cases because we are a tertiary facility, they can take off some of the load."
The Presidential Advisor on Health, Dr Anthony Nsiah Asare, said the government’s massive investment in health infrastructure will soon improve the quality of health care in the Ashanti region.
"The Maternity and Children's ward which is being done is now at the fifth-floor level, and very soon when the contractors come back to work after our debt restructuring, I am very sure they will complete it as quickly as possible.
"But the most important thing is that now, we are opening up hospitals or we are building a lot of hospitals in the Ashanti region."
