Former Minister of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Stephen Asamoah Boateng, has urged the government not to politicised the ongoing conflict in Bawku.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Top Story on Tuesday, January 14, Mr Boateng described the Bawku conflict as a highly sensitive issue that requires careful handling to achieve lasting peace.

According to him, resolving the matter demands a neutral and inclusive approach devoid of political undertones.

“The advice I will give to the current president is that the Bawku matter is so sensitive and politically if we want to do something as politicians, it must be undertone but engage everybody,” he said.

Mr. Boateng specifically cautioned President Mahama against appointing a native of Bawku or its surrounding areas as the regional minister.

He argued that such a move could risk intensifying tensions, as emotions tied to the conflict might influence decision-making.

“Don’t appoint a native of Bawku or a Kusasi as the regional minister,” he urged.

He further stated that the resolution of the Bawku conflict should primarily involve traditional authorities.

According to him, chiefs possess the historical context and credibility needed to mediate effectively.

“I would suggest that it continues with the chiefs. Otumfuo has a very good advantage, knowing the history and everything and bringing in the other traditional authorities like the Yabong Wura and the Yaa Na.”
