The General Agricultural Workers Union (GAWU) of the Trades Union Congress-Ghana (TUC-Gh) has extended congratulated Eric Opoku and Emelia Arthur on their nomination as Ministers for Food & Agriculture and Fisheries & Aquaculture respectively.
GAWU commended President John Dramani Mahama for his commitment to the agricultural sector, as evidenced by these appointments. The Union highlighted the sector's critical role in Ghana’s economy, contributing to GDP, job creation, and food security.
In their statement, signed by general secretary Andrews Addoquaye Tagoe, GAWU urged the nominees to prioritise key areas, including stakeholder involvement in policy formulation, boosting agriculture’s GDP contribution, and investing in irrigation to promote year-round farming. Specific emphasis was placed on auditing and advancing the Pwalugu Multi-Purpose Dam project to support climate resilience and sustainable development.
GAWU expressed readiness to collaborate with the ministers to address challenges faced by agricultural workers and ensure decent work and economic growth. They look forward to engaging the ministers when approved to support the government's vision for agro-economic transformation.
