Minority leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin says his caucus will not immediately challenge in court the suspension of four MPs by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin.
The Speaker suspended the lawmakers for two weeks following a chaotic incident during Thursday’s sitting of the Appointments Committee.
The affected MPs include the Chief Whips of both the minority and majority caucuses, Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor and Frank Annoh-Dompreh, as well as Alhassan Sulemana Tampuli and Jerry Ahmed Shaib.
Mr Bagbin has also set up a committee to investigate the incident, which he described as “an embarrassment to the institution of Parliament.”
During the heated session, MPs were caught on live television overturning tables and damaging microphones in the hall where ministerial nominees were being vetted.
The Speaker has directed the parliament’s Marshal to bar the suspended MPs from entering the chamber during the period.
However, JoyNews’ parliamentary correspondent, Kwaku Asante, reports that the two affected NPP MPs attended a news conference in Parliament despite the directive.
Speaking at the news conference, Mr Afenyo-Markin said his caucus would not take legal action for now, as he was making efforts to engage Speaker Bagbin.
“On this occasion, the doors of engagement have not been shut. We want to give reverence to his high office,” he told journalists.
