President John Dramani Mahama has described the role of Ghana’s Sports Minister as an unenviable one, acknowledging the monumental task ahead for newly sworn-in Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams.
Swearing him in at the Jubilee House on Friday, February 7, 2025, President Mahama did not mince words about the tough realities of the job.
“The Honourable Kofi Adams, Minister for Sports and Recreation, I don’t envy your job," he said.
"You have the monumental task of restoring Ghana to its pride of place in African and world sports.”
His statement shows the intense pressure and expectations that come with leading Ghana’s sports sector, which has been plagued by poor infrastructure, and declining performances across multiple disciplines.
With Ghana’s football struggling, the country’s Olympic performances dwindling, and other disciplines barely surviving due to neglect, the President’s comments reinforce the daunting challenge awaiting Kofi Adams.
While acknowledging the difficulties, Mahama charged the new minister with bringing transparency, professionalism, and modernity into the sector’s management.
“I expect that you inject transparency, professionalism, and modernity into the management of the sector.”
Adams’ first major test will likely be reviving the Ghana Football Association (GFA), with Mahama making it clear that ensuring the Black Stars return to their glory days must be a priority.
“I expect that you concentrate on building up all the sporting disciplines. I know the Ghana Football Association would be a good place to start to make sure that we return the Black Stars to their glory days.”
The weight of expectations on Adams is massive, and with Ghana’s sporting landscape in turmoil, he may indeed hold one of the toughest jobs in government
