Ama Pratt, the press secretary and spokesperson to Ghana’s Vice President, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, has disclosed how she gained her role at the presidency.
In an interview with Joy Prime’s Roselyn Felli on Changes Show, Ama Pratt mentioned that the Vice President called her on the phone and requested that she assume the role.
Although the two have built a healthy personal relationship between themselves, she said she did not ride on that to send an application for the position.
Responding to Roselyn Felli’s question of if Prof. Naana Opoku-Agyeman called her personally, Ama Pratt said, “Yes,” furthering that “She will call you if she has to call you. She’s an amazing human being.”
Ama Pratt has been supportive of the Vice President since the 2020 elections and helped with campaigns. However, during the 2024 polls, she withdrew and worked behind the scenes due to her husband, Kwame Owusu Danso’s, position as the running mate to Alan Kyerematen, the flagbearer of the Movement for Change.
“I didn’t think that it was good for the optics for me to be actively involved. It was unnecessary attention that I didn’t think that the campaign needed. So I took a decision to sort of move away a little bit, still doing the documentary series but not myself. People will go and bring the videos; we put it together and do it.”
Since she was not actively involved, she least expected to be given the role. However, she was filled with joy when she received the call to assume office, leading her to testify to how friendly the Vice President is toward people.
She said that Prof. Naana Opoku-Agyeman serving as Ghana’s first female vice president is a reflection on the entire populace, implying that Ghanaians have matured as a nation. She entreated the citizenry to support her and ensure her success.
“We’re leading that way, and it’s a reflection on all of us. So, once it reflects on us positively, then it’s a collective duty to make sure that she succeeds. We have to make sure that what we lead with, we guide.”
