The Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations, Sam Nartey George, has taken a swipe at Parliament's Appointments Committee, accusing it of deviating from its core mandate during his vetting session.

According to him, the committee’s line of questioning strayed from evaluating his competence and sectoral vision, and instead fixated on personal and political issues.

Mr George, who appeared before the committee for over five hours, lamented that the questioning was dominated by discussions unrelated to his ministerial role.

He specifically pointed out that Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin focused excessively on his past political utterances, rather than interrogating his qualifications or proposed policies for the communications and digital space.

Speaking during an interview on Channel One TV on Monday, 14th April, the Minister expressed disappointment at what he described as a missed opportunity.

He criticised some members of the committee for allegedly using the platform to settle political scores instead of assessing his readiness to lead a crucial ministry in Ghana’s digital transformation agenda.

“A man must stand by what he believes in,” George stated. “When people see the Appointments Committee as a platform to exact vengeance, it’s unfortunate. I expected Mr Afenyo-Markin and others to ask more sector-related questions,” he added.

Concluding his remarks, Mr George said the focus on irrelevant matters—such as his views on the Chief Justice and the former president prevented meaningful scrutiny.

He reiterated that the vetting could have been a golden opportunity to delve into his strategic priorities and policies for the sector but was unfortunately mishandled.
