Director of Communications for Dr Mahamudu Bawumia in the 2024 elections, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has expressed confidence in the growing strength of Ghana’s democracy, describing it as a positive sign for the country’s political future.
He emphasised the important role of the electorate and opposition parties in shaping this ongoing democratic development.
Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show, Mr Aboagye highlighted the maturation of Ghana’s democracy, noting that one of the key indicators of this growth is the electorate’s ability to make decisions based on their evolving needs and aspirations.
“Ghanaian democracy is growing, and that’s a good thing,” he said.
“It’s a positive sign when millions of people can vote in one direction during an election and, in another, change their support based on their changing hopes and expectations. For me, that is the true strength of democracy — it allows the people to make their voices heard and choose what’s best for them,” he added.
Mr Aboagye also stressed that democracy is not just about elections, but about the ongoing responsibilities of political parties, particularly the opposition, in holding the government accountable and offering credible alternatives.
“Our job as an opposition party is to continually fulfil the responsibility that our democracy and multi-party system places on us,” he explained. “We must provide credible alternatives to everything the government is doing, so the people can evaluate those options and make informed decisions.”
“The people must always have options,” he concluded. “Our role is to ensure they have alternatives that align with their values, needs, and hopes for the future.”
