The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has denied social media claims that the Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), Major General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu, was attacked during his recent visit to Bawku in the Upper East Region.
In a statement released on Thursday, April 25, GAF described the viral videos circulating online as "false and should be treated with the contempt that they deserve."
According to the release, the COAS visited Bawku on Wednesday, April 23, as part of a scheduled operational tour, and the visit was peaceful. "COAS’ operational visit to Bawku on Wednesday, 23 April 2025, was successful and no negative incident was recorded."
GAF further noted that investigations are ongoing to identify and prosecute those behind the misleading videos. "Efforts are, however, underway to track the originators of the videos in question to face the law as appropriate," the statement added.
The military also issued a stern warning to bloggers, media outlets, and content creators to verify their information before publication. “GAF once again wishes to caution bloggers, content creators and the media at large to be circumspect in their reportage on GAF operations, especially in Bawku,” the release stressed.
GAF reminded the public that false information could worsen the already fragile security situation in Bawku. It called on all parties to work together to bring peace to the area, saying, “GAF urges all stakeholders to put their hands on deck to help restore normalcy to Bawku and its environs.”
