The Winneba Magistrate Court has remanded into police custody Joshua Karry Arthur, a prime suspect in the murder of Professor Mawuadem Amedeker, a Senior Lecturer with the University of Education, Winneba.
Arthur was arrested at the professor’s residence at Gyahadze, a suburb of the Effutu Municipality, on Thursday, May 22 and later put before the court during police investigation.
Prof Amedeker went missing for many weeks under bizarre circumstances, which prompted his family and colleagues to file an official complaint with the police.
After a vigorous search, the lifeless body of Prof Amedeker was found buried and exhumed a few meters away from his residence.
The corpse of the lecturer has since been deposited at the morgue of the Trauma and Specialist Hospital, Winneba, for autopsy and preservation.
Arthur was subsequently apprehended in connection with the incident and a laptop, a 50-inch television, two Samsung smartphones and a car key to a Toyota Fortuner, all belonging to the deceased retrieved from him, according to the police.
The bizarre demise of the lecturer and the circumstances leading to the discovery of his remains have sent shivers down the spine of the community members who are still in shock.
A good number of police personnel with the Effutu Divisional Police Command have been deployed to the Gyahadze community to ensure safety and allay their fears to enable them to go about their normal business.
ACP Ibrahim Opoku, the Divisional Commander, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview that his office received information from UEW about the disappearance of the lecturer on Wednesday, May 21.
They quickly moved to Gyahadze, combed the area and picked up one young man to take to the police station to assist in their investigations.
They returned to the Community the following day but did not meet the young man. Their search, however, led them to the house of the deceased, where his remains were found in his backyard and exhumed.
It was suspected that he was killed and buried, he said.
“We then called the people around the area who came and identified the body, and we transported the lifeless body to the Trauma and Specialist Hospital’s mortuary for the necessary autopsy and investigations.
