The Dormaahene and President of the Bono Regional House of Chiefs, Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Dr. Nana Freduah Agyemang Badu II, has urged President John Dramani Mahama to initiate a full-scale investigation into the controversial National Cathedral project.
Addressing a durbar during Mahama’s ‘Thank You’ tour on Friday, May 30, the revered chief expressed concern over the project’s financial opacity, especially the staggering $58 million reportedly spent on its development.
“Don’t fear anyone in your pursuit of justice. If you are afraid and fail to do what is required, Your Excellency, it will not be beneficial,” he told President Mahama, urging bold action in pursuit of accountability.
The Dormaahene acknowledged that he may not be fully informed about every detail surrounding the cathedral but stated that the sheer scale of the public concern demands an impartial probe.
“Regarding the National Cathedral and the $58 million—whether the person involved is a pastor, a chief, or whoever they may be—As for that pit. I don’t understand the entire situation, but it must be investigated,” he said.
He further cautioned the former President not to underestimate the importance of addressing the issue, noting that failure to act would erode public trust.
“Don’t let anyone convince you that it’s not worth investigating. If you ignore it, Ghanaians will be disappointed in you,” the Dormaahene warned.
The National Cathedral project has come under intense scrutiny in recent years, with many questioning the justification for such a large expenditure amidst ongoing economic challenges.
