The Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research (ISSER) at the University of Ghana has announced a groundbreaking partnership with the University of Manchester’s Global Development Institute (GDI), offering fully funded PhD scholarships to outstanding Ghanaian students.

The initiative was unveiled during a recent visit by Dr. Osman Ouattara, Director of the PhD Programme at GDI, who engaged with ISSER's graduate students to discuss the new scholarship opportunity. Dr. Ouattara, a seasoned development economist with research interests in the macroeconomic effects of natural disasters and climate change, shared insights into the programme and his academic journey.

The scholarship, part of a broader collaboration between ISSER and GDI, provides:

• Full tuition coverage for four years
• A monthly stipend to support living expenses
• Access to GDI's extensive online courses and research resources
• A one-year study visit to the University of Manchester

This opportunity aims to foster academic excellence and research capacity among Ghanaian scholars, enabling them to contribute significantly to development economics and related fields.

During the session, ISSER Director Prof. Peter Quartey emphasized the importance of international collaborations in enhancing research and academic training. Prof. Quartey, himself an alumnus of the University of Manchester, highlighted how such partnerships can provide Ghanaian students with global perspectives and networks .

Dr. Ouattara's visit also included a generous donation of academic books to ISSER's library, further enriching the institute's resources.

Prospective applicants must hold a Master's degree in a relevant field with a strong academic record. They should also meet the English language proficiency requirements set by the University of Manchester. Interested candidates are encouraged to prepare a research proposal aligned with GDI's focus areas, which include development policy, poverty and inequality, and environmental sustainability.
