In a powerful show of national commitment to climate action, Queen Nihad Titiaka Oases Ibrahim, Winner of Ghana’s Most Beautiful 2024 and Founder of EcoGreen Oases Legacy, joined the President of the Ghana, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation and key government leaders at the official launch of the One Child, One Tree Project on Thursday, 5th June, 2025 to mark World Environment Day 2025.

The event, spearheaded by the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation under the visionary leadership of Hon. Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, brought together a distinguished gathering of stakeholders at the Kwabenya Senior High School in Accra.

Also present were Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, Minister of Education; Hon. Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, Minister of Lands and Natural Resources; Hon. Abla Dzifa Gomashie, Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts; Hon. Linda Ocloo, the Greater Accra Regional Minister; Hon. Faustina Akurugu Elikplim, the MP for Dome Kwabenya; H. E. Niloy Banerjee, the UNDP Ghana Resident Representative; Dr. Hugh C. A. Brown, CEO of the Forestry Commission; and Prof. Nana Ama Klutse, CEO of the Environmental Protection Authority.

The ceremony drew broad support from Ministries, Departments and Agencies, the diplomatic corps, development partners, climate action organisations, environmental-focused institutions, and other distinguished guests.

The One Child, One Tree Project seeks to instill environmental stewardship in Ghana’s youth by encouraging every child to plant and nurture a tree. Speaking at the event, Queen Titiaka called on leaders, communities, and children alike to embrace this constitutional duty to safeguard the environment, referencing Article 41(k) of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution.

"By planting a tree, each child plants hope, responsibility, and life into our soil," she said. "Let us come together to nurture a greener Ghana—one tree at a time."

Queen Titiaka also took a moment to express her profound appreciation to Hon. Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed and the entire Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation for their outstanding leadership in organising such a purposeful and inspiring national programme.

"I am deeply honoured by the invitation extended to me by the Honourable Minister and the Ministry," she stated. "It is a rare privilege to stand on this platform and lend my voice to this noble cause. The Ministry’s commitment to driving environmental action through initiatives like this is truly commendable, and I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to such a vital national effort."

Educating the Next Generation on Plastic Pollution

Later in the day, as part of her climate advocacy and climaxing World Environment Day, Queen Titiaka and her EcoGreen Oases Legacy team, in collaboration with NexGen Deutsche-Afrik, conducted an interactive session on “Beating Plastic Pollution” with students at the Nima Cluster of Schools.

The engagement introduced learners to the principles of Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, empowering them with practical knowledge to address plastic waste. In addition, the team donated sanitation materials, including dustbins, brooms, and rakes, to promote better hygiene and environmental responsibility within the school and the wider Nima community.

National Collaboration for a Greener Future

The presence of President Mahama, top Ministers, CEOs of key environmental agencies, and numerous partners reflected the broad-based national commitment required to tackle Ghana’s environmental challenges.

Speakers emphasised that initiatives like One Child One Tree and community education on waste reduction are critical building blocks in the country’s climate resilience agenda.

As Queen Titiaka aptly concluded: "Together, one child, one tree, and one community at a time, we can transform Ghana into a model of sustainable living and environmental responsibility."
