Genk winger Christopher Bonsu Baah has revealed that he nearly gave up football as a child to pursue a career in dancing, but was convinced otherwise by two key figures in his life—his mother and his youth coach, Sule.
The Ghana international said that at around the age of seven, his passion leaned more toward dancing, and he frequently snuck out to pursue it.
But his mother and coach intervened, determined to steer him back towards football.
“I was a dancer. I said I would not play football again. So I was just going out, sneaking out and dancing. So my mother also wanted me to play football,” Bonsu told Joy Sports.
“The two of them [my mother and my coach] teamed up and they were straight on me. They didn't just give me the chance to go out.
“Even when I sneak out around 12 midnight, my coach would just come out and be chasing, looking for me and my mom too would be also chasing for me. So I think the two of them really helped me.”
That intervention has proved crucial. In March 2023, the then-18-year-old made a surprise move from Ghana’s third tier to Sarpsborg in Norway’s top flight.
After only 12 appearances, Belgian Pro League side Genk acted quickly to secure his signature, fending off interest from some of Europe’s top clubs. Since joining, Bonsu Baah has emerged as one of Ghana’s brightest young prospects.
He recently capped an impressive season in Belgium with his first two senior appearances for the Black Stars, catching the eye in friendly matches against Nigeria and Trinidad and Tobago.
