The Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) has confirmed the successful repatriation of the remains of Nigerian boxer, Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju, who tragically passed away in Ghana in March this year.
The body was airlifted today, June 17, from Kotoka International Airport and is en route to Lagos, Nigeria, with a brief stopover scheduled in Lomé, Togo.
The GBA, in a statement issued by its Communications Directorate, expressed profound gratitude to Ghanaians, members of the boxing fraternity, journalists, and media houses for their unwavering support since the incident occurred.
The authority also assured the public of continued updates on the body’s arrival and funeral arrangements in Nigeria.
In preparation for the final rites in Lagos, the GBA has delegated two key representatives: Gideon Hassen Appiah, a member of the GBA Board, and Lateykwei Lartey, Head Coach of Fit Square Boxing Gym. The duo departed for Nigeria ahead of the body’s arrival at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport.
The GBA President, Abraham Kotei Neequaye disclosed that the GBA has submitted $3,000 to its representatives in Nigeria. The amount includes a $1,500 purse provided by Gordon Frimpong, CEO of Osibor Boxing Management, and an additional $1,500 donation from the GBA.
The total amount is to be handed over to the President of the Nigeria Boxing Board of Control (NBBofC) as part of the GBA’s contribution to the late boxer’s family.
The Ghana Boxing Authority reiterated its commitment to maintaining close ties with its Nigerian counterparts and honouring the memory of Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju with dignity.
