Supreme Court nominee, Justice Janapare Adzura Bartels-Kodwo, is calling for a shift in Ghana’s criminal justice approach to help address the worsening congestion in the country’s prisons.
Appearing before the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Tuesday, June 17, she proposed the adoption of non-custodial sentencing, especially for minor offences, as a practical solution to overcrowding.
“I’m of the view that the time has come when we should strongly advocate for non-custodial sentences in relation to minor crimes,” she said, responding to questions about reforms needed in the justice system.
Justice Bartels-Kodwo stated that prisoners also have rights and should not be forced to live in inhumane conditions.
“We could build one or two more prisons to decongest. They are entitled to sleep like we sleep, and not like they’re all squashed up like sardines,” she added.
