The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has assured Parliament that the government is implementing far-reaching reforms aimed at addressing the operational inefficiencies of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Wednesday, 2nd July, the Minister highlighted key interventions designed to improve revenue collection, reduce system losses, and ensure sustainable power delivery.
Mr Jinapor stated that the ECG’s performance challenges are well-known, but the government has taken deliberate steps to transform the utility into a more efficient and accountable institution.
“We are not oblivious to the concerns surrounding ECG’s operations,” he said.
“That is why we have rolled out significant measures to address inefficiencies within the company, including the deployment of smart meters, enhanced monitoring systems, and a review of management structures.”
The Minister further explained that part of the strategy includes strengthening internal audit systems and intensifying supervisory roles to curb revenue leakages.
“These reforms are already yielding positive results,” he told the House. “Our aim is to create a financially viable ECG that can meet the demands of consumers and support Ghana’s broader energy goals.”
John Jinapor concluded by assuring Ghanaians of the government's commitment to maintaining a reliable and affordable power supply.
“We understand the importance of electricity to national development, and we remain resolute in our mission to deliver quality power services to all. The reforms are ongoing, and we will continue to engage stakeholders to ensure ECG becomes a model utility provider.”
