Defence Minister and outgoing Director of Elections and IT for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr Edward Omane Boamah, has criticised the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) for ignoring earlier warnings raised by the NDC concerning the Electoral Commission (EC).
His comments follow the EC’s announcement of a re-run of elections in 19 polling stations in the Ablekuma North Constituency.
In a Facebook post on Wednesday, July 9, Dr Boamah urged for collective action to restore integrity to Ghana’s electoral process.
“Let’s work together to fix the broken Electoral Commission and save Ghana’s democracy!” he wrote, lamenting what he described as growing irregularities and administrative challenges within the EC’s operations.
He added that the NDC had consistently raised concerns about the EC’s preparedness and conduct ahead of the 2024 general elections, which were dismissed by the NPP.
“The NPP should have listened when we in the NDC raised several red flags about the Electoral Commission Ghana ahead of Elections 2024,” Dr Boamah stated.
Despite his criticism, Dr Boamah suggested that there is still an opportunity for corrective action. “It’s not too late…” he noted, calling for bipartisan cooperation to restore public confidence in Ghana’s democratic institutions.
His remarks come amid renewed debate over electoral transparency and the credibility of the EC’s processes.
