The Minister of State in charge of Government Communication, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has unveiled troubling details surrounding the National Cathedral project initiated by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, citing findings from a reviewed audit report by Deloitte and Touche.
The audit, which covers the period from 31st December 2021 to 31st December 2023, reveals a litany of financial irregularities, including procurement breaches, unsupported expenditures, and poor governance practices within the National Cathedral Secretariat.
The report points to a widespread disregard for due process, with unexplained payments, discrepancies in contract values, and weak internal controls painting a picture of mismanagement at the highest levels.
In a sharp departure from previously reported figures, the government now indicates that the total financial commitment to the project stands at $97 million.
This includes an outstanding payment of $39 million owed to the contractor, despite the project being abandoned for several years. Notably, the flawed nature of the contract means that costs continue to accumulate daily, further deepening the financial burden on the state.
