At the opening of the 2025 UN High-Level Political Forum, Dr Nii Moi Thompson, Chairman of the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC) and Special Advisor to the President on the SDGs contributed to the global discussion on SDG financing, innovation, and productivity.
Addressing the issue of financing, Dr. Thompson highlighted Ghana’s progress in implementing tax reforms aimed at equity and inclusivity, ensuring that tax policies do not disproportionately affect the poor. He emphasised the need to promote local economic development as a key catalyst for national growth.
On innovation, he highlighted the launch of a $1 billion Innovation Hub, which is expected to accelerate progress in education, health, and human resource development.
This hub, he explained, will serve as a transformative vehicle, making innovation central to Ghana’s development agenda.
Beyond financing and innovation, he drew attention to the often-overlooked global productivity gap, particularly between wealthy and less-resourced nations. He cautioned that increased financial resources alone do not guarantee better development outcomes and called for deliberate efforts to enhance productivity.
Dr Thompson outlined the Commission’s collaboration with the Management, Development, and Productivity Institute to lead a productivity revolution across the public and private sectors. He affirmed Ghana’s willingness to share its best practices with the international community.
