The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has arrested four suspected armed robbers and fatally shot another in a separate intelligence-led operation within the region.
According to police sources, the first incident occurred on 9 July, when a distress call reported an armed robbery along the Ankaako–Asuoso–Fenase road in the Amansie South District. Four armed men had allegedly blocked the road and were robbing commuters.
A police patrol team on duty swiftly responded to the call and arrested all four suspects as they attempted to flee on motorbikes.
The suspects have been identified as Rahman Alhassan, 27; Nurudeen Fatawu, 25; Naafewu Masahudu, 22; and Yaw Saaka, 42. A pump-action shotgun, 20 rounds of AAA ammunition, a sword, and a string of talismans were retrieved from them.
In a separate development, a suspected armed robber was killed in a police raid at Abedwum in the Obuasi Municipality.
According to police accounts, the suspect and his accomplices were engaged in a series of robbery activities in the area. Upon spotting the police team, the suspects fled into a nearby bush while firing at the officers. Police returned fire, resulting in the death of one suspect during the exchange.
A search of the deceased’s backpack revealed 14 rounds of ammunition and other items, which police have not disclosed.
Law enforcement officials believe that the fleeing suspects may have sustained gunshot wounds during the confrontation and have since launched a manhunt to apprehend them.
Police have assured the public of their continued commitment to maintaining safety and security across the region.
