Former Tamale Central MP, Inusah Fuseini, has attributed the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) victory in the Akwatia by-election to what he described as the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) lack of a clear campaign message.
Mr. Fuseini stressed that the NPP’s inability to present a unified campaign contributed significantly to their defeat.
In an interview on JoyNews' Newsfile on Saturday, September 6, the former Ranking Member of the Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee of Parliament said, although he expected a competitive race, the NPP’s internal challenges and disorganisation made the NDC’s win less surprising.
“I was not surprised at all. I knew there was going to be a challenge, but many things worked for us. The NPP now is in disarray. That is their default status,” he said.
“They [NPP] had no campaign. Tell me their campaign. What did they say? They haven’t decided. One campaign message they give three people,” he added.
The NDC won the seat by a margin of about 2,000 votes. The Akwatia MP-elect, Bernard Baidoo polled 18,199 votes (about 54%), marking a key breakthrough as the NDC reclaims the crucial swing seat from the NPP..
Mr Baidoo's close contender, Solomon Kwame Asumadu of the NPP, polled 15,235, and Owusu Patrick of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) garnered 82 votes.
