Spokesperson for the Bawumia Campaign, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has downplayed concerns raised in a petition submitted to the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), insisting that political fundraising is a routine and legitimate activity.
The petition, filed by Solomon Owusu and his legal representatives, calls for an investigation into Dr. Bawumia’s own public claims of procuring over 300 pickup vehicles for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and raising record sums of money for political campaigns. It argues that such declarations raise questions about the source of funds, possible abuse of office, and breaches of Ghana’s political financing laws.
Responding to the development in an interview on Joy FM's Top Story on Wednesday, September 17, Mr Aboagye said there is nothing unusual about a politician mobilising resources through donations, fundraising dinners, short codes, and contributions from supporters.
“I don’t think it’s something that is such a big deal. It is one of the easiest things for a politician worth his salt to do — to mobilise resources.
."..We organize fundraising events, we open desks in campaign offices, and we receive contributions from individuals, groups, and organizations. Some of these donations are even made public,” he explained.
He emphasised that once the OSP begins its processes, Dr. Bawumia would be ready to respond accordingly.
“Every citizen has the right to petition, but there is nothing necessarily alarming in here. Raising 300 or even 500 pickups is possible through legitimate mobilization from friends, family, and acquaintances. The intent is what matters, and in this case, there’s nothing untoward,” he added.
