President John Dramani Mahama has presented a GHC500,000 cash reward to the University for Development Studies (UDS) following their remarkable victory at the FISU World University Football Tournament in China.
UDS, who made history as the first African university to win the global competition, paid a courtesy call on the President at the Jubilee House, where they presented the trophy.
President Mahama announced that the government is establishing a School Sports Authority to oversee and develop sports from the basic level through to the university level.
"My government, though the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, and the Ministry of Education is working to strengthen Youth and University sports systems to ensure that talented students or athletes are identified, developed and supported to reach professional levels," Mahama said.
"We are setting up the School Sports Authority which will concentrate on sports from the basic level to the secondary level to the university level."
UDS captured global attention after staging a dramatic 2-1 comeback win against Brazil’s Paulista University in the final.
Despite conceding within the first 10 seconds, captain Mohammed Sulemana levelled the game in stoppage time before Ezedeen Alhassan sealed the victory with a stunning goal from a corner kick in extra time.
The UDS contingent returned home on Sunday, October 5 to a jubilant welcome at the Kotoka International Airport.
