Damongo Senior High School has secured the sixth position in the grand finale of the 2025 SHS Renewable Energy Challenge held in Accra.
The school’s innovative project focused on converting food waste into biodegradable substances, a concept inspired by Ghana’s persistent struggle to manage plastic waste.
The initiative sought to provide a sustainable alternative to plastics by turning organic waste into environmentally friendly materials.

Damongo SHS earned an impressive 73 percent, placing sixth among six finalist schools from across the country.
The Director at the Office of the Deputy Chief Executive, Engineering and Operations of the Volta River Authority (VRA), Engineer Richard Ahenkorah Osei, presented the award and commended the team for their creativity and contribution to promoting renewable energy and environmental sustainability.
For their performance, the school received a total prize package worth ₵42,000, comprising 25 LED street lights, 10 Integrated Science textbooks, two skeletal system models, one plaque, ₵3,000 cash, five Android phones, six solar lamps, certificates, souvenirs, and an additional ₵5,000 cash reward.
