The Cyprus International University (CIU) was alive with fanfare as Ghanaian students at the Republic of Cyprus gathered to celebrate Ghana’s 58th independence anniversary.
Some of the students were adorned with bright and colourful kente cloth and something reminiscing their homeland Ghana as they proudly waved their miniature Ghana flags far from home.
They ceremoniously cut an anniversary cake to mark the memorable day as they danced to popular Ghanaian songs.
Indeed the Independence Day was celebrated in style; the students from various countries and high profile personnel of the Cyprus International University were treated to mouthwatering local dishes like banku, fufu and light soup, and ampesi among others as they put local foods on the international map.

Stephen Kwame Owusu-Amoh, President of Ghanaian Students, CIU, North Cyprus, noted that Ghana is faced with challenges that need concerted efforts both from within and outside Ghana to surmount them.
“My brothers and sisters, 58 years down the line, we cannot tickle ourselves and laugh, that all is well,” he observed.
He also touched on national cohesion, which he described as the “bedrock on which genuine transformation and the economic turn-around we so desire could be realized. Without unity, transformation in all aspects of our lives would be a mirage and a pipe dream”.
Mr. Owusu-Amoh further stated: “Thus, oneness, positive thinking, right attitude, sense of patriotism backed by the knowledge and love of God would better position us for the ultimate independence; which is economic independence of Ghana and our dear continent of Africa.”
Present at the event were Vice Rector of Cyprus International University Prof. Halil Nadiri, General Secretary Dr. Ahmet Adalier; West and East Africa International Officer Gizem Kavaz, and PRO of Ghanaian students in CIU John Mahama Akpanyi.
