The Society of Private Medical and Dental Practitioners, Ghana (SPMDP), has thrown its full support behind the ongoing National Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Vaccination Campaign launched by the Ministry of Health and the Ghana Health Service.
The nationwide vaccination exercise, which runs from October 7 to 11, 2025, aims to protect girls aged 9 to 14 years against cervical cancer—one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths among women in Ghana.
In a statement signed by its National President, Dr. (Med) Andre Kwasi-Kumah, and National Secretary, Dr. (Med) Matthew Kwame Edusei, the SPMDP described the campaign as a landmark public health initiative and a “vital investment in the health and future of Ghanaian girls.”
“The HPV vaccine has been proven to be safe, effective, and lifesaving, providing long-term protection against the most common cancer-causing strains of the virus,” the statement said.
“Countries that have successfully implemented HPV vaccination have recorded significant declines in cervical pre-cancers and related mortality.”
The society urged all private medical and dental practitioners to actively support the campaign through public education, client sensitisation, and community outreach. It encouraged practitioners to educate parents and guardians about the safety and benefits of the vaccine, offer space for outreach activities by District Health Directorates, and refer eligible girls who visit their clinics for vaccination at designated sites.
“As private sector health providers, we play a vital role in ensuring equitable vaccine coverage and making sure no eligible girl is left behind,” the group noted.
The SPMDP reaffirmed its commitment to work closely with the Ministry of Health, the Ghana Health Service, and other partners to ensure the success of the campaign, adding that collaborative action can make cervical cancer elimination in Ghana achievable within a generation.
“Let us stand united and make this campaign a national success story,” the statement concluded.
