One person has been confirmed dead, while four others are receiving treatment for gunshot wounds following a violent clash during the Odwira Festival at Ahwerease in the Akuapem South Municipality of the Eastern Region.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, October 22, during traditional rites to lift the ban on drumming and noise-making, marking the official start of the festival.
According to the Eastern Regional Police, 34 suspects have been arrested in connection with the violence and are currently in custody at the Aburi Police Station, assisting with investigations.
Officers also retrieved a pump-action gun and a pistol from the scene.
The clash reportedly broke out between the Abokomahene of the Asona Family, Nana Semenhyia Asakrofa, and the Abimuhene of Ahwerease, over who had the authority to perform the sacred ritual.
The disagreement quickly escalated into chaos when some young men opened fire, injuring four people. One of the victims was later pronounced dead.
Confirming the incident, Eastern Regional Police PRO, Superintendent Ebenezer Tetteh, said the retrieved weapons will form part of the evidence in the ongoing investigation.
“We have arrested 34 suspects who are assisting us with investigations. The weapons recovered will be subjected to forensic examination,” he said.
Superintendent Tetteh further assured that police have intensified patrols in the area to maintain peace throughout and after the Odwira Festival.
“We are determined to ensure that calm is restored and that anyone found culpable will face the full rigours of the law,” he added.
The Odwira Festival, celebrated annually by the people of Akuapem, is one of Ghana’s most prominent traditional festivals, symbolising purification, unity, and thanksgiving.
However, this year’s edition has been marred by tension and bloodshed, prompting calls for tighter security during traditional celebrations.
