The Member of Parliament for the Walewale Constituency, Dr Tia Kabiru Mahama, has congratulated Muftawu Nabila Abdulai for being named the Sports Journalist of the Year for the second consecutive time at the 29th Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Awards held in Kumasi on Saturday, November 8, 2025.
In a post on his Facebook page, Dr Mahama commended the JoySports journalist for his consistency and dedication to excellence in sports journalism, describing his achievement as an inspiration to the youth of the Walewale Constituency and the North East Region.
“Congratulations to Muftawu Nabila Abdulai for making sports journalism a worthy pursuit. You have won this back-to-back and it serves as an inspiration for many young people in the Walewale Constituency and the North East Region,” Dr Mahama wrote.
He added, "I convey, on behalf of the people of the Walewale Constituency, my felicitations to you.”

Muftawu, who hails from Duu, a community within the Walewale catchment area in the North East Region, has distinguished himself through storytelling that blends human emotion, discipline, and the spirit of perseverance.
His award-winning feature, “Trey Haun: The Boy Whose Ride Lifts the Ghanaian Flag High and Inspires a Community to Dream Big,” tells the extraordinary story of a young boy in Nalerigu, the capital of region Muftawu hails from. The boy's passion for cycling has inspired many children in Nalerigu to dream beyond limitations.

The piece was celebrated for capturing not only the thrill of sport but also the determination and humanity that define greatness.
Muftawu’s back-to-back triumph at the GJA Awards reinforces his reputation as one of Ghana’s most compelling sports storytellers — a journalist whose work continues to raise the standards of sports reporting across the nation.
