Chief Justice, Georgina Theodora Woode, has pledged to seriously take up the issue of hundreds of people who are being held in Ghana’s prisons without due process.
This follows the broadcast of a documentary, ‘Locked and Forgotten’ on Joy News highlighting the inhumane conditions under which these prisoners are kept.
The Chief Justice made the pledge at a meeting with Seth Kwame Boateng, producer of the documentary.
She had earlier requested a copy of the documentary and after receiving it told Seth, “I am promising you that I’m going to work with this documentary, I’m going to deal with the issues…I promise you”.
Seth said he found it gratifying that the inmates are finally going to get some help and that the Chief Justice’s promise gladdens his heart.
Some lawyers have also contacted Seth in respect of the same documentary and pledged to provide legal assistance to the inmates and get them the judgment they deserve.
A woman who was remanded at the Tamale Central Prisons for four years after beating her pregnant daughter to death was also set free yesterday by a court after the documentary was aired.
