The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has condemned the chaotic scenes from Sunday night’s Africa Cup of Nations final in Morocco.
Fans clashed with security officers after hosts Morocco were awarded a late penalty in Rabat, before Senegal walked off the pitch only to return minutes later.
Morocco captain Ashraf Hakimi threw away Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy’s towel, while his teammate Ishmael Saibari attempted to take the towel from substitute goalkeeper Yehvann Diouf, who stood behind Mendy’s posts ostensibly to stop any more of such occurrences.
In a statement on Monday, CAF said it ‘‘condemns the unacceptable behaviour of some players and officials during the Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 Final between Morocco and Senegal in Rabat last night.’’
‘‘CAF strongly condemns any inappropriate behaviour which occurs during matches, especially those targeting the refereeing team or match organisers.’’
‘‘CAF is reviewing all footage and will refer the matter to competent bodies for appropriate action to be taken against those found guilty.’’
Meanwhile, Senegal coach Pape Thiaw has since apologised for the decision to withdraw his team from the match, even though it was reversed.
Senegal won the match through an extra-time goal by Pape Gueye to secure their second AFCON title.
