The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has announced it is investigating an alleged assault on a journalist by military personnel in the North East Region, an area grappling with escalating security threats.
On Monday, January 26, 2026, soldiers in Walewale, a town in Ghana’s North East Region, reportedly assaulted and detained Solomon Kwame Kanaluwe, a journalist with the Media General Group, over where he had parked his motorbike.
Solomon, the North East Regional correspondent for the Media General Group, told the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) that he had parked his motorbike in front of a shop when about four soldiers approached and began asking for the owner of the motorbike.
According to the journalist, the soldiers claimed that dealing with anyone who disrupts their operations was part of their work.
He said one of the soldiers showed him a section of what he described as the military code of ethics on his phone, stating that when personnel are on duty, and someone obstructs them, they are permitted to subject the person to what was described as minor punishment.
In a press release dated Wednesday, 28 January 2026, GAF confirmed the probe into the incident, which was reported to have occurred on the outskirts of Walewale on Monday.
“The Ghana Armed Forces is investigating an alleged assault on a journalist which was reported on Monday, 26 January 2026,” stated Captain Veronica Adzo Arhin (Ghana Navy), the Acting Director General of Public Relations.
The military linked the context of the alleged assault to a deteriorating security situation in the area. The release noted that the North East and Upper East Regions have recently seen attacks on public transport, resulting in deaths and injuries.
This volatile environment, GAF explained, has led to increased, unannounced military operations. “The general public is hereby informed to cooperate with the Ghana Armed Forces and other security agencies,” the release cautioned, alerting citizens to the heightened security measures.
