President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to maintaining a strong and resilient Ghana Armed Forces, despite prevailing resource constraints, warning that the country’s security environment is becoming increasingly complex and unpredictable.
Speaking at the graduation ceremony of the Ghana Military Academy on Friday, January 30, President Mahama said the commissioning of new officers, even in difficult economic circumstances, demonstrates the state’s determination to safeguard national security and preserve stability.
He noted that Ghana and the wider West African sub-region continue to face serious security threats, with heightened risks along the country’s northern borders.
“The security situation in our sub-region remains complex and volatile. Violent extremism, terrorism and trans-border crime continue to pose serious threats, especially along our northern frontier,” the President stated.
President Mahama also highlighted the changing nature of global security challenges, observing that the rise of non-state actors and asymmetric warfare has reshaped how threats emerge and evolve worldwide.
He stressed that addressing these challenges effectively requires a collective national effort, rather than reliance solely on the armed forces and other security agencies.
“Security cannot be viewed as the exclusive responsibility of the armed forces and security institutions. It is a shared national duty that calls for the active involvement of citizens, communities, civil society organisations, traditional authorities and government,” President Mahama said, adding that collective action is essential to safeguarding the peace Ghanaians cherish.
