The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) success in uniting the party and running an effective campaign ahead of the 2028 general elections will largely hinge on the behaviour and conduct of supporters of the various flagbearer aspirants, according to Sammi Awuku.
He emphasised that while the presidential primaries are over, party members must now focus on the larger goal of securing victory in 2028 by putting internal contests behind them.
Mr Awuku urged party supporters to rally firmly behind Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the party’s newly elected flagbearer, and warned that internal commentary and online activity could either strengthen or weaken party cohesion.
“The NPP’s problem will not be the big men who contested. It will be those around the big men who were on the ballot. Our commentary, our conduct, our ability to accommodate differences, and keeping in mind the bigger picture of the party winning the 2028 elections are what matter. That is why it is often said that the victor must be magnanimous in victory and the loser must be gracious in defeat,” he said in an interview with Citi FM on Monday, February 2.
Dr Mahamudu Bawumia secured 110,643 votes, representing 56.48 per cent of the valid votes cast, and was followed by former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong with 46,554 votes (23.76 per cent), Dr Bryan Acheampong with 36,303 votes (18.53 per cent), Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum with 1,999 votes (1.02 per cent), and Kwabena Agyei Agyepong with 402 votes (0.21 per cent).
