A dark cloud has descended over the Akyem Kade community in the Eastern Region following a gruesome murder-suicide that has left a three-year-old child orphaned and two families in deep mourning.
In the early hours of Monday, February 2, 2026, residents of the Kwaebibrem Municipality were shaken by the discovery of two lifeless bodies inside a single-room apartment.
Adom TV’s Eastern Regional Correspondent Kwasi Azor reported that Atta Panyin, a 22-year-old popularly known as Koo Fante, was found hanging from the ceiling, while his 21-year-old girlfriend, Akosua Deborah, lay dead on the floor with multiple gunshot wounds.
The chilling scene was uncovered around 6:00 AM when neighbours, concerned by an unusual silence or suspicious signs from the room, decided to investigate.
Upon forced entry, they were met with a sight that has since sent shockwaves through the town.
Preliminary police reports suggest a violent domestic escalation.
The sudden and violent nature of the deaths has left the community struggling to understand what could have triggered such a fatal encounter between the young couple.
The most heartbreaking aspect of the tragedy is the loss of Akosua Deborah, a native of Akyem Takorase.
Described by friends as a vibrant young woman, she was a mother to a three-year-old child who is now left without parents.
Kofi Asare, a close friend of the deceased man and an eyewitness to the aftermath, spoke to the media with visible distress.
While the specific details of their final conversation remain part of the ongoing investigation, the sense of disbelief among Panyin’s peers is palpable.
"We never expected something like this. Seeing them both like that... it is a heavy blow to all of us in Kade," Asare briefed the press on the discovery.
Officers from the Kade District Police Command arrived swiftly to secure the perimeter.
The bodies have since been conveyed to the local mortuary for preservation and a comprehensive autopsy.
Investigators are currently focusing on:
- The Source of the Firearm: How a 22-year-old came into possession of the weapon used to kill Deborah.
- Prior Reports: Checking if there were any previous reports of domestic abuse or threats made by Panyin against Deborah.
The incident adds to a worrying trend of domestic-related fatalities in the country.
Experts suggest that early intervention and mental health support are critical in preventing such escalations.
