President John Dramani Mahama has unveiled plans for a new national airline alongside comprehensive upgrades to Ghana’s airport infrastructure, aimed at boosting connectivity, easing congestion, and enhancing the passenger experience.

Speaking during the 2026 State of the Nation Address on 27 February, he revealed that a 10-member task force has submitted a business model and operational framework for the upcoming national airline.

“This airline will take off soon, Inshallah,” President Mahama told Parliament.

Airport Upgrades and Expansion

Passenger traffic at the Ghana Airport Company rose to 3.625 million in 2025, up from 3.4 million in 2024, prompting infrastructure enhancements:

Accra International Airport: Terminal 2 is being remodelled into a dual-purpose facility for domestic and selected international flights to reduce congestion at Terminal 3. A new concourse will link Terminals 2 and 3, allowing seamless passenger transfers. Terminal 3 will also feature a seven-storey car park, an airport hotel, and retail amenities. Runway expansion and overlay work are underway to strengthen operations.

Regional Airports: New airports are being constructed in Sunyani, Bolgatanga, and Wa to improve national connectivity. In Sunyani, a new site has been chosen due to runway limitations at the current location. Bolgatanga’s airport is being relocated to a safer site, while Wa will host a modern facility to meet regional demand.

Airport Renaming

President Mahama announced the official reversion of Accra International Airport to its original name, in line with prior legal provisions that were never implemented.

“Going forward, all international records will refer to it as Accra International Airport,” he confirmed.

Strategic Vision

These initiatives form part of a broader government plan to modernise Ghana’s aviation sector, support economic growth, and improve air connectivity across the country.

“Accra Terminal 3 remains among the best in Africa, and these upgrades will further enhance the passenger experience,” the President said.
