The Overall Best Debater at the 2026 Commonwealth Parliamentary Debate, Titus Owusu Darko, says Ghana's vaunted reputation as a beacon of democracy in the Commonwealth is not translating into tangible economic benefits for its university graduates.
Mr Darko, a student of the University of Media, Arts and Communication (UniMAC), asserted while arguing against the motion, “Ghana's status as a beacon of democracy in the Commonwealth translates into actual economic opportunities for its university graduates,” at the debate held at the Parliament of Ghana.
According to Mr Darko, Ghana's democratic credentials have not addressed the pressing issue of graduate unemployment, leaving many educated youths struggling to make ends meet.
“Ghana's status as a beacon of democracy in the Commonwealth does not pay the bills of unemployed university graduates,” he emphasized.
His argument impressed adjudicators, earning him the top spot at the debate. He was commended by influential office holders at the Ghana Parliament, including Madam Kate Addo and Superintendent Afia Tenge (Rtd.)
The win is a testament to Mr Darko's exceptional debating skills and his ability to articulate pressing issues affecting Ghana's youth.
His argument highlights the disconnect between Ghana's democratic progress and the economic realities faced by its citizens, particularly university graduates.
