Kofi Bentil, Senior Vice President of IMANI Africa, has called for the complete abolition of sole-sourcing in Ghana’s public procurement, describing the practice as deeply abused.
He made the remarks on the JoyNews Newsfile programme on Saturday, March 28, amid discussions on the government’s Big Push infrastructure contracts.
“We must abolish sole-sourcing; it has been abused,” Bentil stated, emphasising that awarding contracts without competitive bidding undermines transparency and accountability in public spending.
The call follows a report by The Fourth Estate, which highlighted concerns over extensive sole-sourced contracts under the Big Push programme, raising questions about potential cost inflation and procedural irregularities.
Despite claims by Roads and Highways Minister Governs Kwame Agbodza that only 44% of major contracts were sole-sourced, critics argue that non-competitive practices remain widespread.
Mr Bentil warned that the continuation of sole-sourcing erodes public trust and called on the government to ensure that future infrastructure projects adopt open and competitive procurement processes.
