The National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress and Chief Executive Officer of GoldBod Ghana, Sammy Gyamfi, has clarified that the party never pledged to abolish sole sourcing in public procurement.
Speaking on Ekosii Sen on Asempa FM, Mr. Gyamfi stated that the NDC’s position has always been against the abuse of sole sourcing, not the procurement method itself.
He explained that sole sourcing can be justified under exceptional circumstances but should not become the norm in awarding public contracts.
Mr. Gyamfi accused the Executive Director of Media Foundation of West Africa, Sulemana Braimah of misrepresenting the party’s stance, insisting that criticisms of the previous New Patriotic Party government were based on what he described as misuse and breaches of procurement laws.
He further argued that President John Dramani Mahama never promised to ban sole sourcing entirely, but rather to curb its excessive use.
“I have never claimed that sole sourcing is corruption or that it defines corruption as a procurement method. Sulemana Braimah is cherry-picking and needs to be more objective. What we stated about sole sourcing while in opposition is that it should not become the norm for public procurement; however, it can be appropriate under certain exceptional circumstances.
“I emphasised that the previous government did not have those exceptional circumstances, and according to the auditor’s findings, the amount involved was problematic and detrimental to the country,” he said.
