The police administration says all police stations across the country have been assigned a special police guard.

The heavily armed men would guard police cells, especially at night to ensure that no crime suspect escapes.

The measure follows recent jail breaks during which several suspects have fled from cells.

Director General in-charge of Police Public Affairs DCOP David Ampa-Bennin told Joy News, documents available following assessment of the cells involved suggest that “the cells are in good order”.

He stated that officers who were on duty when the incidents occurred have not been “left off the hook” as investigations continue. There could be “numerous causes” to the jailbreaks, DCOP Ampa-Bennin conceded but assured that findings of the investigations would be made public.

“What we have done is to fortify the [stations] with police armed guards,” he said in addition to the personnel routinely manning the stations whose guns are usually kept in the armory.

The special guard, he explained, is to “ensure that in the event of any eventuality he is there as the last person…when he is there and finds anything, he can hold the fort as the rest call for reinforcement”.
