President John Mahama has announced the addition of 200 megawatts of power to the national grid as part of efforts to fight the distressing  load-shedding exercise.

The President made the announcement, Tuesday, whilst commissioning a $35million substation.

The new addition would relatively improve power supply to homes and to industries, all of which have suffered remarkably under the load-shedding exercise.

For over three years, the country has had to grapple with power outages amidst different explanations for the sad state of affairs.

Government, as well as other power generation agencies, attributed the load shedding exercise to limited gas supply from Nigeria, faulty power plants and fall in water level at the Akosombo dam.

The situation got worse early this year with GRIDco announcing a 12-hour-on-24-hour-off load-shedding regime.

The load-shedding exercise left many thoroughly disappointed and frustrated.

Shortly after the Easter celebration some residents have reported a relative improvement in the power situation, even though some are also yet to enjoy better services.

President John Mahama at the commissioning ceremony also debunked assertions the Electricity Company of Ghana was going to be privatised.

The ECG will remain a 100 per cent state-owned entity, Joy News Gifty Andoh-Appiah reported the President as saying.

He said the Enclave Power companies which are owners of the new substation distribute power to about 48 commercial customers operating within  the Ghana Free Zones enclave.

The Enclave power companies are a part of LMI holdings a privately owned Ghanaian holding company.

The President said private power distribution is not new to Ghana and should not be mistaken for privatization.
