A Police Sergeant at the Ashanti regional headquarters of the Ghana Police Service is being investigated over the loss of an AK-47 assault riffle.
The policeman with service number D31177, but whose name is being withheld was issued with the rifle for night duty at a bank at Adum in October, 2006 but when he reported for work at the headquarters the following day, he could not produce it.
He claimed that the rifle was snatched from him by armed robbers at the Race Course area at Bantama, a suburb of Kumasi where armed robbers allegedly abound.
What has aroused the suspicion of the police authorities is how he found himself at the Race Course area which is outside his schedule.
A police source said that the police sergeant is facing service enquiry to determine his fate.
