Repair works have finally taken off on the 20-year-old dilapidated Galosota bridge in the Keta municipality of the Volta Region.              

This was after Joy News broke the story of the poor state of the bridge which has become a death trap for both residents and visitors to the community.

Some residents who spoke with Joy News expressed joy that movement on the bridge would soon be safe.

According to them the bridge is important for the facilitation of economic activities in the area.

"We are very happy that our bridge is being repaired which means an end to our sorrows and we are also thankful to Joy Fm  for first doing a story on the bridge which has finally made government take action on our plight",  a Assembly man for the area said.                                                  

Repair works on the bridge, which started, last week, is expected to be completed within 40 days.

The project is being undertaken by the maintenance unit of the Ghana Highways Authority under the Ministry of Roads and Highways.   

Engineer in charge of the repair works Aaron Amposah expressed hope that with about 28 men at work on bridge, the repairs works will go on as planned. He revealed that the team will move to the Atiteti bridge - which also needs repair works - for another 21 days.

He asked for collaboration from the chiefs and the community for a successful completion.              

The MCE for Keta Sylvester Tornyeavah in an interview with Joy News said this repair works is a great relief to the people of Keta.

The MP for Anlo, Clement Kofi Humado, expressed gratitude to the government for coming to the aid of the people after several years of appeal.

Before the repair works, Joy News exposed the plight of the people of Galosota and its surrounding communities on the danger posed by the bridge to residents.

Many people including children have fallen into the Vinye river due to the huge gaps in the bridge, slowing down movement and economic activity.

When repairs works are completed, the bridge will link communities and towns not only in the Keta municipality but also in the South Tongu district of the Volta Region.
