Guilin Pharmaceutical Ghana Ltd, a Chinese multinational pharmaceutical company, producers of anti-malaria drugs and hospital equipment has donated boxes of anti-malaria drugs to the Accra Psychiatric Hospital.

The drugs which included Glunate and D- Artepp valued at ₵11, 700 were part of the company’s numerous corporate social responsibility programs planned for this year.

Receiving the donation, the Chief Psychiatrist Dr. Akwasi Osei thanked the management of the company for the gesture.

He said the anti-malaria drugs will go a long way to save the hospital from its already constrained resources.

Dr. Osei said about 40 percent of the patients occasionally suffer malaria infections and the hospital buys malaria drugs to treat them which he said is unbearable for the hospital to cope with.

He noted that the government’s medical supply to the hospital has not been forthcoming making it difficult for the hospital to operate effectively.

According to Dr. Osei, the Mental Health Authority that was supposed to establish a fund to ensure a successful running of the hospital has not yielded any positive result.

The operations of the hospital would be brought to a halt, if we should rely on government subvention alone, the chief psychiatrist indicated and called for a concerted effort to keep the facility running.

He maintained that mental health delivery is not a preserve and sole responsibility of government, and therefore called on corporate bodies and religious organizations to support the hospital.

The Field Force Effectiveness Manager of Guilin Pharmaceutical Ghana ltd, Cyrus Baidoo said the management was touched by the news that the hospital staff were going to embark on a protest due to the shortage of some essential drugs and logistics.

He said his company which is committed to the welfare of the people decided to reach out to support the hospital to provide better health care to patients in the hospital.

He said the company spends ₵40,000.00 on corporate social responsibility annually and would continue to support other institutions that need help.

Mr. Baidoo noted that the World Health Organization has recommended the company’s flagship artesunate drug for the treatment of severe malaria, adding that the Global Fund has donated some of the company’s anti-malaria drugs to the Ghana Health Service to treat severe malaria.
